Does Turnitin offer a solution to detect Artificial Intelligence (AI) writing?
Yes. Turnitin has released its AI writing detection capabilities to help educators uphold academic integrity while ensuring that students are treated fairly. At DWU, we use Turnitin license that has the AI detection capability.

They have added an AI writing indicator to the Similarity Report. It shows an overall percentage of the document that AI writing tools, such as ChatGPT, may have generated. The indicator further links to a report which highlights the text segments that Turnitin model predicts were written by AI.

Please note, only instructors (lecturers and tutors) and administrators are able to see the indicator.

While Turnitin claim confidence in its model, it does not make a determination of misconduct, rather it provides data for us as educators to make an informed decision based on our academic and institutional policies. Turnitin emphasizes that the percentage on the AI writing indicator should not be used as the sole basis for action or a definitive grading measure by instructors.

Please ensure you are familiar with our academic policies, Assessment policy, Plagiarism and Integrity policy (see Policies page), also talk to your lecturers about any confusion you may have about Turnitin or what is considered acceptable use of AI in your respective class.
