LD603 Leading & Managing Change in Developing Countries

DESCRIPTION

The core of leadership is the ability to understand one’s context in a changing world and to act purposefully. This unit explores leadership as shaped primarily by cultural, social, political and economic contexts in developing countries. As such, leading and managing change in developing countries, like PNG, requires an understanding of the multiple tensions, e.g. the individual versus the community or the common good, local-level government versus provincial-level government, provincial-level government versus national government, public sector versus private sector, government versus churches, professional development versus sustainable development, multinational corporations versus resource-owners. What kinds of leadership are necessary for good governance and enhancement of people’s livelihoods? How can the various organisations and communities adapt to global forces of change? What role can businesses, government and nongovernment organisations play in sustaining society/communities?  Students will also be exposed to skills in leading in challenging environments, leading diverse employees, coaching/mentoring and managing change.
