The Medical and Surgical Nursing unit provides students with a comprehensive foundation for the assessment of patients/clients’ health status in order to determine and deliver competent nursing care based upon the goals of health restoration, maintenance, promotion and prevention of diseases. Students will explore competencies needed to identify health problems and use problem -solving approaches to manage patient care. The unit requires the application of theoretical learning into practice regarding patient care management. In the process students demonstrate an understanding of the influence of pathological processes in human anatomy and physiology and the effects on mental, social, cultural and spiritual aspects, thus developing a holistic perspective to nursing assessment and care. Students will be engaged on clinical basis to apply problem-solving approaches to identify and manage health problems. Medical Surgical Nursing is a core unit in the undergraduate Diploma in General nursing program. It lays the foundation for nursing practice.

The subject introduces reproductive health. It outlines the basic understanding of sexual reproductive health system. The women’s health and neonate develops learner’s knowledge to understand the development of early human evolution and the changes that occur during pregnancy. It will also enable the leaner to acquire knowledge and skills to provide appropriate care to the client antenatally, intrapartumlly and postnatally. The learner is required to apply theoretical learning to practice and demonstrate the clinical skills in assessment, care and management of patients. Since competency must be obsevered in this program, learner’s performance will be closely monitored and assessed to identify the learner’s weakness and give appropriate coaching where necessary, both in theoretical and clinical areas.

Paediatric Nursing Unit develops participants’ knowledge and skills to accurately identify, diagnose and manage disease and disorders of the body system of sick children, using the structured standards of the ten steps check list. The unit also develops the participants’ skill and knowledge to help prevent illness by educate and promoting healthy living for families in the community.

This unit looks at the history of the church and the influence of the church today especially in Papua New Guinea and the differences between churches and how this affects patient care. It also looks briefly at psalms and proverbs and their relevance in our lives and work today. The personal life of the Christian nurse and her interaction with the patient are also discussed. The unit enables students to improve their knowledge of the history of the Christian churches and the influence of the church in Papua New Guinea as well as their knowledge of psalms and proverbs and their relevance today. This will help students in their Christian life and their interaction with patients. The Christian ethical principles unit enable students to develop a holistic approach towards patients care and encourage them to meet the patient’s spiritual needs better during their interaction with them. The knowledge, skills and attitudes gained in this unit will be integrated to the other units.
This unit of Integral Human Development aims to develop the spiritual and mental dimension of the Christian person in the context of his/her personal relationships as well as study and work abilities. and ways of providing emotional support.
This spiritual development of the person is based on the Biblical Revelation as interpreted by the Catholic Church and the Menta//Emotional Development as described by Dr Erick Erickson.
The unit aims to help the students to develop their spiritual gifts and to achieve successful performance of their mental function, resulting in fulfilling good relationships with themselves, God, other people and the environment.
The unit also aims to help participants to realize that they are free to make decisions and choices that affect their own live and that of their patients for which they are responsible, and to enable them to productive activities in which their natural gifts and skills are strengthened by their spiritual, intellectual, emotional and relational gifts.

This unit teaches more advanced practical skills needed in the care of patients. Students will develop in-depth understanding of the theory and scientific rationales behind advanced nursing skills and the therapeutic effects on the patients. Nursing Practice was previously a practical component of the medical surgical nursing unit but it now stands alone as a unit of its own. This allows students sufficient learning and skill practice hours to develop competence and confidence in applying advanced and therapeutic nursing skills in patient care management. Nursing practice is a core unit in the undergraduate diploma in nursing program.
