This unit puts a theoretical foundation to online teaching and learning practices at the tertiary level and places it within the wider context of contemporary developments within the higher education sector. It discusses the introduction and expansion of technology in higher education and its impact on the teaching and learning practices. Drawing on epistemology and theories of learning, the unit questions the nature of knowledge in the digital age. Contemporary theories of online teaching and learning are introduced and discussed leading students to critical evaluation and possible re-designing of their teaching practices to accommodate pedagogical best practices.

OT502 Building an Online Learning Community

A key challenge in the transition from campus-based to online learning is the loss of social connection to peers and feelings of loneliness. This unit assists learners to develop online programs to promote sense of belonging, trust and social interaction. Learners will be introduced to key attributes of sense of belonging and its links to student attainment in Higher Education. Emphasis will be placed on the development of practical strategies to support active student engagement, including the establishment of instructor presence; meaningful communication between instructors and students; and embedding peer-collaboration in program design.
